ABOUT THE ARTISTS

One of the current and prominent father-son artist teams is Cippy and Waddie Crazyhorse (Cochiti) who were featured in the recent Wheelwright Artists Market. Their bold, deep stamp and chisel designs on thick gauge silver are among their trademarks. They will talk about their legacy work from one generation to the next starting with Cippy’s parents, Teresita and Joe H. Quintana.

Cippy says of his work, “There are traditional classic styles in silver jewelry, the Navajo and the Pueblo, and I do the latter: from cuff bracelets to concho belts, buckles, and bead necklaces.” He taught himself with smaller tasks of making silver chains and gradually taught himself the old style of silver making. Waddie began to learn to silversmith during the summer of 9th grade when he was only allowed to observe and not to “play”. From that time, his work has matured with his use of non-traditional stones and negative space. His inspiration is based on his father’s and grandfather’s work and pre-1900 Navajo museum pieces.
