Join the Friends for this special lecture with Duane Makima (Laguna/Hopi)
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Duane Maktima is a contemporary jewelry designer of Laguna and Hopi descent who lives and works just outside of Santa Fe in Glorieta, New Mexico. According to Duane’s grandfather, the name Maktima means “searching for eagles.”
Duane uses lapis, coral, fossilized ivory, lavulite, green and blue turquoise, shells, and wood to create geometric patterns of vibrant color. In his presentation, Duane will talk more about how he uses that color and form to reiterate prehistoric Native American symbols that he has discovered in his vast research. In addition, Duane’s works have been greatly influenced by other factors including his grandfather, father, and European design concepts.
