Gallup/Flagstaff Road Trip
Experience Three Days of Discovery and Art
Join the adventure and wonder first-hand by experiencing Native American art and craftsmanship through the eyes and expertise of Wheelwright Museum’s Executive Director, Henrietta Lidchi, and the Case Trading Post Manager, Ken Williams. This exclusive trip highlights a visit to the Museum of Northern Arizona and Easton Collection Center, The Hubbell Trading Post, Tanner’s Indian Arts, Zuni Artist Resource Gallery and a unique opportunity to visit with Native American artists and see their work.
The first stop of the trip will be at the newly opened Zuni Artist Resource Team (ZART) Gallery in Gallup. ZART provides the tools, training and methodology that allow Zuni artists to present their beautiful artwork in the marketplace. Daryl Shack, a Zuni artist with over 44 years of experience as a fetish carver and painter, will be the host of this new presentation. This gallery and museum space is partnered with the Keshi Foundation (Santa Fe).
For the evening, there will be a very special and festive gourmet meal created by Chef Johnathan Tanner at the historic trading post, Tanner’s Indians Arts. Joe E. Tanner, his wife, Cindy, and their daughter, Emerald, will host the evening and share authentic treasures of this store as well as telling accompanying stories. Ample time will be provided for personal assistance in viewing and purchasing from the vast turquoise and silver collection. Tanner’s great grandfather, Joe, built many trading posts throughout the Southwest since the mid-1800’s.
There will be a road trip to The Hubbell Trading Post on Thursday. Ken, along with a Hubbell guide will lead a tour of the trading post with its history, culture, and weaving demonstrations. The trading post has a rich heritage beginning in 1878 with its purchase by John Lorenzo Hubbell which was ten years after the Navajos were allowed to return from Bosque Redondo. Hubbell had an enduring influence on Navajo rugmaking and silversmithing. Henrietta will share her perspectives and knowledge at the Post. Hubbell was the foremost Navajo trader of his time having owned over 24 trading posts. Lunch will be served picnic-style at the Post. The trading post has operated the same way since the 1870s. There will be time to see and purchase textiles and other items here.
The day will end in Flagstaff. Each evening the dinners will spotlight several presentations from Native American artists. Ken has selected renowned Native artists who are widely known for their work. They will share time and experiences with the group. In addition, Ken has chosen exciting emerging artists who are making their mark in the art world. They will demonstrate their work as well as tell their personal story.
The focus on Friday will be the Museum of Northern Arizona which sits at the base of the San Francisco Peaks, homelands sacred to Native Americans throughout the region. The museum is a premier facility for the study and exploration of native people and natural sciences. The tour will showcase current exhibits. A special feature of the visit will include a project under the direction of Dr. Kelly Hays-Gilpin. The research is exploring Hopi culture continuity through pottery, rock art, mural painting and fiber perishables, including baskets and textiles. In addition, information will be presented regarding the partnership with the National Museum of Ethnology (Minpaku, Japan) to help a global and authenticity of museums’ information about their ethnographic collections and the communities from which they come. This visit will enhance and broaden the understanding of the Native cultures of the Colorado Plateau. Lunch will be served during the Museum visit.
Price is $500 for Friends Members per person ($575 for non-Friends). The trip is limited to only 22 persons to provide the best personal attention and interactions. Fee includes gallery tours, all meals and social gatherings, artist presentations, gratuities, and experienced guides at every location.
The deadline for registration is Wednesday, September 20th. No refunds will be honored past this date. Hotel registration is separate from the registration fee.
Due to safety and health standards, transportation is the personal arrangement and expense of the individual. Individual carpooling is suggested.
