Friends Program: Poetry Reading and Artist Talk with Max Early

04/09/2018 @ 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm

Free – $10

“I write poetry to preserve thoughts and prayers that seem to be gradually going away. The younger generations have lost a great deal of knowledge from stories and legends that were only told orally. I write to keep these memories and moments alive for the next generations. I write to share what knowledge I possess to remember the morals and tales of our people.” – Max Early

Laguna Pueblo poet and pottery artist Max Early will read selections from his first book, Ears of Corn: Listen (3: A Taos Press), which includes meditations on history and modern times that flow through the passing seasons. Early’s poetry is unique in that he writes in both English and his native Keresan language. Early will also talk about his life as a potter and demonstrate his process. As a potter, he works in traditional styles in order to keep the art of Laguna Pueblo pottery alive. Max Early will have pottery and books available for purchase after the presentation.

Max Early received his BA in English/Creative Writing from the University of New Mexico. He was one of four native poets honored at the 17th Annual Taos Summer Writer’s Conference, and was the 2015 Lannan Foundation Indigenous Writer-in-Residence Fellow at the School of Advanced Research. At present, Max is working on his second book of poetry with the goal of helping to preserve the Keresan language and the cultures and traditions of his pueblo.

The Friends Lecture Series are held in the Mary Cabot Wheelwright Library, and are free for Friends members. (There is a $10 charge for non-members.) Doors open at 2:00 p.m. and programs begin at 2:30 p.m. Seating is limited.
