In 1989, Douglas Preston and the photographer Walter Nelson set out on a 1,000 mile horseback journey retracing Coronado’s crazy search for the legendary Seven Cities of Gold. Not following roads or trails, they packed their supplies, slept under the stars, and found water and grass where they could.
