April 27: $20 for Friends members, $25 for non Friends members
Trip is capped at 25 people.
Schedule
- Transportation is not provided, we suggest carpooling.
- 10:30am Guided tour of the Forked Lightning Pueblo archaeological site at the Park. This site is one of several prehistoric sites that were predecessors to Pecos Pueblo. Access is limited to this site so this is a particular benefit of the trip. We will be guided by a ranger.
- 1:00pm Lunch at the picnic area at Pecos Historical Park main site. Sack lunches will be provided.
- 1:30 – 3:00pm Self-guided tours of the Pecos Pueblo site and the ruins of the pre-revolt church and the post-reconquest church and convent. This is a loop trail from the visitor center. The trail passes through an open area below the walls of the village where trading fairs with other Indian tribes took place. This can also include the Ancestral Pueblo alternate Trail.
- Self-guided tours of the new museum exhibition hall in the visitor center. The new exhibits feature materials recovered from early twentieth century archaeological excavations that include jewelry and ceramics. It shows the extensive trade networks that connected to the Pueblo.
- There is a significant section in the exhibition about the repatriation of archaeological materials and human remains that were removed during archaeological excavations. The exhibit tells the story of the on-going participation by the descendants of the Pecos people who now live with their linguistic relatives in Jemez Pueblo.
- During the self-guided portion, support will be provided by Mike Ryan, author of Turquoise in America and Steven Harvath, Ph.D. in Southwest Archaeology.
- Sack lunches will be prepared by Pancho’s Deli. This will include a choice of turkey or vegetarian sandwiches, chips, cookie and bottled water.
