Join Deb as she explores the importance of Leekya Deyuse (Leekya) the 20th century Zuni master of carving in turquoise and shell. This talk explores his history and carving techniques, presenting his work through archival images from the Wheelwright Museums John Adair Archives, and carvings from the Wheelwright Museum’s permanent collection.
Deb Slaney is collections data manager at the Wheelwright Museum and an independent curator. She holds a Master of Liberal Studies with museum emphasis from the University of Oklahoma, and a Bachelor of Arts in southwestern anthropology from the University of Arizona. She has authored six books on southwestern art and culture including Leekya: Master Carver of Zuni Pueblo, and Blue Gem White Metal: Carvings and Jewelry from the C.G. Wallace Collection.
